Practice explaining your poker decisions.

Saying your reasoning out loud shows you where it breaks.

PokerThink gives you a real spot. You explain what the villain can have and what you would do. Talk or type, messy is fine.

Then a coach tells you what you got right and the one thing you missed. That is how you learn to think in ranges instead of guessing one hand.

What a coached hand looks like

Flop. You hold A♥ K♣ on the button. The board is K♦ 8♥ 5♣. The big blind checks.

You

“He checked, so a weaker king, an eight, a small pair, or he just missed.”

Coach

Right. You included weaker kings, smaller pairs, and missed hands in his range.

Missing. His check leaves strong hands in his range too. He can check to the raiser with almost anything, so the check alone tells you little.

From a hand coached by PokerThink. Then it asks the next question: so what do you do here, and why?

How to put someone on a range, step by step

Start with his seat and his first move. A big blind who calls a raise has a lot of hands. A tight player who raises first has far fewer.

Then go street by street. Each bet keeps some hands and drops others. Each check tells you something too. Ask which hands would play it exactly this way.

Then ask if he is capped. If he would have raised his monsters earlier and did not, he probably does not have one now. If nothing he did rules them out, keep them in.

Then decide. Which of those hands pay you, and which ones beat you? That is the whole routine. PokerThink asks it every street until you do it without thinking.

Questions

How do I learn to think in ranges?

Stop guessing one hand. Name the groups of hands he can have from his seat and his betting, street by street, and say why each one stays or goes.

How do I put someone on a range?

Start from his seat and his first move, then keep or drop hands with every bet and check, then ask if his betting has ruled out his strongest hands.

Why does saying your reasoning out loud help?

Because a read you only feel is hard to check. Said out loud, the gap shows. You hear the street you skipped or the hand you forgot.

How do I review my hands without a coach?

Ask the same two questions every street: what can he have, and what do you do. PokerThink asks them for you and tells you what you missed.
